When to Add Firmware Over-the-Air Updates to Your Project

Date: September 22, 2025

Choosing to add firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates can make or break your embedded project’s scalability and profitability. With experience supporting dozens of clients across environmental monitoring and industrial IoT deployments, our team understands when FOTA provides real advantages and how to integrate it effectively into a system design.

Understanding the Fundamentals

Traditional firmware updates require physical access to each device. You connect via USB cable, JTAG programmer, or other hardwired interfaces to flash new code directly onto the microcontroller. This works perfectly when programming devices fresh from the factory or when you have easy access to all deployed units.

Instead of sending technicians to each location or requiring users to plug their device into a PC, firmware over-the-air updates let you deliver new code remotely through wireless networks. While some remote updates can also be performed over wired connections like Ethernet, FOTA typically refers to wireless delivery. The device downloads the new firmware in packets, reassembles them, verifies data integrity with checksums, and installs the update without requiring anyone to be physically present at the device.

When to Avoid Firmware Over-The-Air Updates

FOTA isn’t the right fit for every IoT project. Early prototypes, devices with a rigidly defined feature set, or cost-sensitive projects often benefit more from traditional update methods, since the additional complexity and setup required for FOTA can outweigh its advantages.

Early Prototypes: Devices that won’t leave your facility, or where physical hardware is likely to change doesn’t typically justify FOTA complexity.

Budget-Constrained Projects: For projects with tight budgets, I generally recommend avoiding FOTA initially. However, it’s important to identify any desire for FOTA early in development, since planning for it in the hardware and toolchain allows you to add it later.

Simple, Static Functionality: Devices with well-defined requirements that won’t change over time rarely benefit from remote updates. PLEASE don’t add Wi-Fi and remote updates to your microwave.

The FOTA Advantage: When Remote Updates Transform Your Business

FOTA becomes essential when traditional programming creates operational nightmares:

Large-Scale Deployments: One client faced updating 70 devices scattered across remote locations. Flying technicians to dozens of sites would have cost thousands of dollars per device in travel and lodging alone. FOTA eliminated those costs entirely while enabling faster feature deployment.

Active Development Projects: Products under continuous improvement benefit enormously from FOTA. Instead of waiting months between update cycles, you can push new features and bug fixes as soon as they’re tested.

Security-Critical Applications: When vulnerabilities emerge, FOTA enables rapid response across your entire deployed fleet rather than coordinating complex manual update logistics.

Getting Started

Start by honestly assessing your deployment scenario. Don’t add complexity you don’t need, but don’t skip FOTA when it provides clear operational advantages.

Make this decision early in development. Adding FOTA to existing designs costs significantly more than building it in from the beginning. Hardware selection, firmware architecture, and system design all benefit from knowing FOTA requirements upfront.
